Path of Exile Item Upgrading
Item upgrading allows players to improve their weapons and gear by adding new affixes, boosting its base stats or giving additional benefits. To upgrade items, players must have the item in their inventory and have access to the kiln.
Typically, items with weak bases (like rings) can be upgraded to a more powerful base while items with strong bases such as eth titans do not vary much in their stats after being upgraded.
Upgrade components
Upgrade components can be added to weapons, armors trinkets, weapons and gathering tools. They provide an attribute bonus or additional effect, when the equipment is being used. They can be bought from vendors, or found in loot from enemies, or gotten from missions and chests. Some upgrades have additional cosmetic effects. Most upgrades require the equipment to be above a certain level before they can be upgraded.
To upgrade a weapon, armor or other item in the game, the player must select it and click the Upgrade button in the toolbar. This will show a preview on the right side of the screen, showing what the expected upgrade stats will be, as well as the necessary element or material required to make that happen.
There are three types that are universal upgrades (which include gems), prefix upgrades, and suffix upgrade components. Universal upgrades, which include gems, are able to be used in any kind of equipment and provide smaller bonuses than upgrade components that are type-restricted. Infusions are jewels that can only be used in legendary and ascended equipment. They provide the same bonuses as jewels, however they cannot be used in other equipment. Suffix upgrades can be added to gathering tools. They will add the suffix to the end of the item's name. For example adding a Glyph will transform a staff wrapping of Minor Vigor a Canthan staff wrapping of Minor Vigor.
If an individual upgrades a gathering tool and replaces the glyphs by a different one the old one will be returned to their inventory. If you replace another upgrade component with a glyph, it will be destroyed, except for the inscriptions, which can be swapped freely.
Leveling
The upgrade system in Path of Exile has some significant changes from earlier versions. Gear is now divided into tracks and items can be upgraded a certain number of times before being "leveled out." The upgrade cost increases with each level up however the materials required do not increase as much. This allows players to focus their efforts on a few items and maximize the impact of these items, instead of dispersing upgrade costs across multiple pieces.
This will enable the item to receive new upgrade components and a greater chance of success. This bonus is known as Artisan's Energy. It will reset to 0 if an upgrade fails or increases if the upgrade succeeds.
When a piece is upgraded to the maximum level, it will be able to receive the affixes needed to enhance its abilities. The number of affixes available will depend on the item's class. For instance, an uncommon or unique weapon that has a standard base will have only two affixes. A legend armor will have eight affixes.
Each upgrade requires a certain number of Flightstones or Crests, depending on the type of item at its current level and what slot it is placed in. Weapons usually require more Flightstones than other equipment.
If an item is not able to attain its maximum level The NPC will offer players the option to transfer it to another person and then re-infuse the item with another set of upgrades. This process takes up to two hours and will cost the same amount of material but will result in less chance of success.
Engineers employ a level to compare the height of the building against a known location, such as an existing benchmark. This process is known as a "level-loop." This involves taking readings using the level, backsighting rod and then turning the level to take the foresighting rod reading. This method makes sure that buildings are built to a high level of safety and accuracy.
Rerolling
Rerolling is the process of changing the upgrade components of an item. It is an important aspect of the game and can drastically improve an item's strength or damage, as well as other characteristics. This can be accomplished through the item menu or using the Reroll button on an upgraded item. Rerolling items can be costly and should be handled with care.
The game lets players recycle upgraded items, which are used to obtain tokens for rerolls. These tokens are then used to upgrade the original item or another similar item. Sets

Clicking the Upgrade button will display the attributes of the item and the required items to upgrade it. The item's attributes will be displayed, along with any required items. For example the No-mouth Face will require 1.1K Scrap Materials, 250 Enchanted Dust, and 5 Glowing Shards to upgrade. Players can also look up the upgrade requirements for specific items at the Cyrodiil Golden vendor or Leaderboard.
